Manila to Aparri 2023

I wasn’t completely sure about this trip—but sometimes the road doesn’t wait for certainty.

This was my second major journey to the north, as far as I can remember. Doubt was there from the very beginning, but I chose to move anyway. Looking back, that decision alone already made the ride worth it.

If you’ve noticed a pattern in my bike tours, most of them happen around August. That’s the only stretch of the year when I get a real break from school. Yes, I’m a teacher 😄—and this is how I spend my vacation.

This particular adventure stood out for one brutal reason: the heat. The heatwave was relentless. Anyone who’s experienced Cagayan weather knows it feels like the place was given a double portion of sunlight. Even taking a shower offered no relief—the water itself felt hot enough to wake you right back up 😂.

Still, it was a different kind of journey altogether. Long roads cutting through valleys and hills, relentless climbs followed by fleeting moments of rest on the descents. Tough, exhausting, and unforgettable in ways that only long rides can be.

So without further ado, here’s my adventure.
